How to redact a W-2 before sharing it

A W-2 is one of the most identity-theft-dense documents you own: your full Social Security number, legal name, home address, and employer details, all on one form. Apartment applications, loan files, and income-verification requests rarely need all of that. Redact first.

What to redact on a W-2

Heads-up: some mortgage underwriters require unredacted W-2s late in the process. Ask what they actually need — for the early application stages, a redacted copy is normal and routinely accepted.

Why "covering" the SSN doesn't work

Drawing a box over box a in a typical PDF app leaves the number intact underneath the annotation — it copies straight out. Scribbling on a printout and re-scanning works, but then you've got a scan of a scan. And uploading a W-2 to an unknown "free PDF editor" means sending the exact document an identity thief wants to a server you know nothing about.

Redact your W-2 in three steps

  1. Drop the W-2 on redactoronline.com. It renders in your browser — no upload, and it keeps working with your internet off.
  2. Mark the fields. "Auto-detect PII" finds the SSN instantly; drag over the address block and any other box. W-2 arrived as a paper scan? Run "Scan (OCR)" first, then auto-detect works on it too.
  3. Click "Redact & download". Marked pixels are destroyed and the page is rebuilt — there is nothing under the black boxes to recover, and no metadata pointing back at the original.

Common questions

Is a redacted W-2 still valid proof of income? For most applications, yes — the recipient needs the wage figures, employer, year, and your name. If a specific recipient requires the full form, they'll say so; start private by default.

The same SSN appears on all my copies (Copy B, C, 2). Search for the number once and every occurrence on every page gets marked in one click.

Can the redaction be reversed or the number recovered? No. The output page is a flattened image with the marked area destroyed — no hidden text layer, no annotation to peel off.
